Frequently Asked Questions about One Llama
1. Is One Llama Auto Insurance?
No, One Llama is NOT an auto insurance provider. We operate as a mutual support program for auto collision and comprehensive protection. While we do NOT offer liability insurance—which is required in most states to legally operate a vehicle— One Llama do provide a competitive alternative for auto collision and comprehensive coverage, often at about 50% of the cost of traditional auto insurance.
2. What should I do if the police stop me?
Can I show them my One Llama plan? In the U.S., drivers are legally required to have liability insurance. If stopped by law enforcement, you must present your liability insurance. One Llama does not offer liability insurance; we focus solely on Collision and Comprehensive protection. Therefore, you will need to obtain auto liability insurance from a licensed provider to legally drive in the U.S.
3. My car is worth more than $100,000. Will One Llama cover me?
Not all vehicles are eligible for One Llama membership. To qualify, vehicles must meet the following criteria: (1) Original retail value of $100,000 or less; (2) 20 years old or newer (with the exception of the GEM package); (3) No commercial vehicles; (3) Annual mileage of 30,000 miles or less; (4) No more than 2 accidents in the past 12 months. Additionally, if you intend to use your vehicle for ride-sharing services, such as Uber or Lyft, this must be disclosed during the application process.
4. What are the benefits of joining One Llama?
Members with no incidents can enjoy significant savings—up to 40% for safe drivers with a clean record. In the event of an incident, members benefit from community support for car repairs. One Llama operates as a tech platform that facilitates this collective sharing.
5. How does One Llama work?
Upon signing up for a plan, 30% of your payment is allocated as a service fee, while the remaining 70% constitutes your pledge to support other members.
If you remain incident-free for a 6-month period, you could save up to 40% on your plan. When an incident occurs, you would contribute about 2-3% or less of your pledge for the repair cost. The most you would contribute per week is up to 8% of your pledge. In the event of your own incident, you will be responsible for a $1,000 out-of-pocket expense plus your remaining pledge. The reamining repair cost or the difference of the repair cost and your contribution, would be contributed by the communty. Just as you share in the repair cost for other members, the other members in the community would share in the repair cost for your incident.
6. How are my premium costs calculated? Are there different levels of coverage?
